Fuck your breath- A song of Lament

In response to Day 9 of the Lenten Lamentations devotional, we are sharing a song of lament, written by Michael Kim-Eubanks. Many thanks to Michael for sharing his art generously with us during this Lenten journey.

Fuck your breath

*Song was originally written after a police officer yelled “Fuck your breath” to a dying Eric Harris, who was shot and killed by Tulsa police in 2015

Creator, you hovered over the waters
When all was dark and formless
You spoke and there was life
Creator, you took the dust and formed us
Breathed on us and made us
Your Spirit gave us life

And they said, “Fuck your breath”
When they watched you bleed to death
They said, “Fuck your breath”
When they watched you bleed to death

King Jesus, how long?
How long, how long, how long?
King Jesus, how long?
How long, how long, how long?
Will strange fruit be in season
Will you comply with treason
Jesus, how long, how long, how long?

Spirit, you came down to Mary
Gave to her a baby
His name was Emmanuel
Spirit, you fell on Him in the water
You drove Him to the desert
Gave Him power to call forth the kingdom

And they said, “Fuck your breath”
When they sent him to hang to death
They said, “Fuck your breath”
When they sent him to hang to death

Kign Jesus your cross,
your cross, your cross your cross
King Jesus, your cross
your cross, your cross your cross
They meant it for destruction
But you led us to redemption
Jesus your cross, your cross, your cross

King Jesus, how long?
How long, how long, how long,
How long, how long, how long,
How long, how long, how long?
Til the Kingdom comes in fullness
Til you make your home among us
King Jesus, how long?
How long, how long, how long?

King Jesus, how long,
How long, how long, how long,
While we wait show us your cross
Your cross, your cross, your cross
